The History Of Rock House

Rock House, which is listed Grade II, began life in the 18th century, probably built as a farmhouse on the Bridgewater Estate. Whilst it appears on a number of estate maps in the 1700’s, the first visual record of Rock House occurs in one of John Claude Nattes’ drawings of Worsley in 1807. Although only a small part of the building is visible, it appears to have been a two storey, single depth structure. In the early 19th century, the house was largely rebuilt and doubled in depth to become a Regency style residence. This greatly enlarged building is shown on the back of a ticket issued in 1851 for the visit of Queen Victoria.

In 1861, the tenancy was taken over by the family of Thomas Tyrer Smith who worked for Bridgewater Estates as variously a cash auditor, an estates’ clerk auditor and a commercial clerk. It was here that he wrote, and from where he sold copies of, “The Bridgewater Waltz”, perhaps composed to mark the end of the Bridgewater Trust in 1903.
